What's in a name...

Quote from the New York Times:
"wife and three children of Qaddafi enter Algeria, Government says..."

Quote from Reuters:
"Libya rebels say will seek extradition of Gaddafi Family from Algeria..."

Quote from the Irish Times:
"Gadafy loyalists urged to fight on..."

I am definitely "confused.com"!!  Are these three reputable news publications talking about the same person, there couldn't be three of him, could there?  Or have their 'spelling' editors all gone for a tea break??

So being curious as I am.  I googled the spelling to see who was right..  And to my surprise, they all are!  Apparently it is estimated that there are 112 way of spelling his name, jeez, just as well there aren't 112 of him!  The spell checker seems to like the Qaddafi version the best, so does that put the NYT out in front?

Anyway, it make me think about my own name, Siobhan (pronounced Shove-on).  There are a couple of 'correct' ways to spell my name too (does that make me like Gaddafi, Gadafy, or Qaddafi, Yikes!!!).

Siob̊an (old Irish spelling, the dot over the 'b' because they didn't have a 'h' in their alphabet)
Siobhán  (the proper Irish spelling with a 'fada' over the a)
Siobhan (the most widely used version)

There you go, a bit of useless information for you, unless you know a few Siobhan's that you want to impress!!

I just use the more common/modern way Siobhan!  But never mind the spelling, you should hear how some people pronounce my name.  The funniest example being the Koreans that I used to work with who called me Cy-O-Ban!

You should have hear what I called them (when they were out of ear shot of course!!). :)

Apple Pie anyone?

A great day for me and for the Dubs!

I finished my bedroom and the Dubs finished Donegal!  I'm very proud, of being a Dub and of my bedroom!

And after all that exertion and excitement, I did something very calming.  I went outside in the sunshine and picked the apples off my apple tree.  There are loads this year, and they are already starting to fall so I wanted to get to them before the slugs did!  Time to make some Pie!

Then I sat on the couch and watched 'Elbow' (accompanied by a string quartet) live from the Reading festival with my son.  And ate Maltesers!  I like this sitting on the couch eating Maltesers so much I am going to stay here and watch Muse, they're on next!

Apple Pie anyone?

One thing led to another.....

Just had my breakfast outside on the deck on this lovely sunny Sunday morning in Dublin.  Sat there for a while, (a long while) until a big black rain cloud came over and hid the sun from my view.

I sat there in the sunshine trying no to think about having to finish painting the room I started yesterday.  It's beginning to look good,  and should look very nice when I am finished.  But, you know when you go to do something, you always find that there is something else that needs to be done, well I have that problem now, but it was of my own making.

Yesterday before I started painting, I thought I would take down the window blind so that I didn't get paint on it.  So I pulled the string to roll it up, to make it easier to take down, and the whole blind landed at my feet in a heap.  And not only the blind, but the brackets that hold it in.  And not only the brackets, but half the plaster from the window with them.  And not only that blind, but it took the one beside it with it and the brackets and plaster from that one too.  And they also left me with a nasty gash on my arm as it hit me on the way down!  Boo Hoo! :-(

Then after I cleaned that up, I decided to move the bed into the middle of the room so that I would have a clear path round the room to paint, and as I pushed it, I heard a loud crack.  I didn't feel any pain, so I knew it wasn't one of my bones!!  So I peeped under the bed and discovered that one of the wooden lats underneath the bed had given way and then it too fell in a heap.  So I fell in a heap on top of it. I am worn out before I even start.  This room is out to get me!

So now I have a big bandage on my arm and a lovely (nearly) painted clean room, with a broken bed, that everybody on the road can see because I have no blind on the window.  Later today, when I finish painting I have to go and look for a new blind, because the old broke in pieces when it landed.  And then I have to go and look for somebody who can fix the plaster.  And then I have to go and look for somebody with a drill who can refit the blind for me, and hopefully fix the bed too......Effort!!

At least I didn't get paint on my shoe and walk it all over the house......oh wait.....

The sun's back out......Is it too early for a drink....?

Bah humbug!

Well...we lost...to those pesky English...I'm lost too, for words!

I'll just have to pin all my hopes on Dublin beating Donegal tomorrow!

Up the Dubs!

I might have to go out tonight and drown my sorrows.....

Weekend winners!

Congratulations to Conor Niland, he has just qualified for the main draw of the US Open!  And we may have a second Irishman not far behind him...

Could this be the start of a winning streak for Ireland this weekend!!  Let's hope so...

Good luck to the Irish Rugby team tomorrow, playing our arch enemies, The English!!

Oh, and best not forget Dublin playing an important match on Sunday too!

I'll be glued to the TV!!

Rusty and the sock!

Yawn....nothing like a big stretch to get you going after a long lazy nap.  Suppose I better get up and see what's going on.  Hold on, just have to scratch behind my ear a bit....ah...that's better.  Maybe I'll just stretch out here again while I think of something to do.  I might go outside and scare a few birds, show them who's boss.  Or I might have a look out the front window and see if that pesky cat from across the road is lying in the flower bed again, and stand in the window menacingly staring at her, or I might chase a few flies for some fun.  No, I get bored with that, they fly up high where I can never get them.  Or, I might go and investigate what's on the menu for today, see has it changed since yesterday.  They have no imagination with my food, it's the same thing in the same bowl in the same place at the same time, every day!  Or, I might just lie here and have another yawn or a stretch or a scratch or a nap....

I can hear some chatting from the two in the other room, one of them, the small blond one, is looking at that silver thing that she sometimes has on her lap, she never wants to go for a walk when she is looking at that thing, so I don't like it.  I try talking loudly to her, but that makes her hands go up over her ears and her hair stand on end, well it always stands on end as far as I can see, and she has the cheek to complain about mine being all over the place!  The tall dark one is lying on the couch, watching that square thing in the corner that has the funny colours and makes noise.  It makes more noise than I do, but they never give out to it!!

Sometimes, when the small blond one is not here, the tall dark one lets me up beside him on the couch.....but when the blond one comes in I have to jump off quickly, act all innocent, run over to her and sort of pretend that I am happy to see her, oh the indignity!  She never notices that I've been on the couch, but she does put her hands on her hips and speak to the tall dark one in a loud voice, he just laughs....I don't understand what the big deal is anyway, they spend all their time lying on the couch so why can't I?

Actually, I'm feeling a bit energetic, I think I'd like something to play with.  I know, I'll get one of those nice soft things that those two put on the end of their legs, they are good for chewing and throwing in the air.  And I know just the place to get one.  Hmm...the only thing is, it could prove a bit difficult tho, as after I've retrieved it, I'd have to get it past the two legged creatures.  Nothing like a challenge, or a cat to chase, to get me out of my bed!

OK, I'm off my bed, give myself a quick scratch and a shake, quietly does it now, walk past the two of them and don't make eye contact.  I wish my feet wouldn't make such a clicking noise on the floor, maybe I should wear some of those things they put on their feet, instead of playing with them.  Made it to the stairs, they don't seem to have noticed me.  Up the first flight, quick pause at the top to look back and see if they have spotted me.  I can hear laughing, but no one is following, right, up the next flight.  And hurrah!  I've made it to Mecca, the place where the dark one sleeps.  (Sometimes when the blond one goes to work and forgets to close the kitchen door, I come up here and have a nap with the tall dark one).  And what a load of treasure there is for me here.  Soft fluffy things all over the floor, some of them look like they have been here for a while!  Oh no, I can't decided, too much choice, and I don't have much time.  Should I go for a white one or a black one.  Or a white one with a black stripe, or a black one with a white stripe.  I stand still and listen, do I hear movement from downstairs?  Quick just grab the nearest one and make a speedy getaway.  A white one it is, and down the first flight in double quick time.  Now, this is where it gets tricky....

I stand at the top of the last flight of stairs and wait for a minute, listening, all is quiet.  They seem to be whispering about something.  I make my way slowly down the next flight, and peep round the banister.  The're not looking at me and they are laughing at something, good, they don't seem to have noticed me.  I'll just nip in behind this chair, careful not to drop the soft fluffy thing.  Well whatever is keeping them occupied must be very funny, because they are laughing their heads off now, and it's helping me make my escape.  I'm going to have to be fast now.....right.....over the arm of the couch......under their legs.....through the door.....across the kitchen.....heading for the back door... . they've noticed, and they are after me....nearly there.....the garden is in sight......don't look back.....made it.....DAMN!!  The door's locked, grrr, should have checked that before I tried to make my escape.....turn around slowly.....they are behind me now.....quick, drop the fluffy thing.....(no evidence, no crime).....dart under the kitchen table.  I'll  just sit here looking innocent.

The blond one picks up the fluffy thing, the dark one picks me up.  The blond one is talking again with her hands on her hips, what's her problem, maybe the dark one is in trouble!!

I'm certainly not in trouble cos I am now on the couch beside the dark one being tickled for being such a clever dog!!  I think, after all that excitement, that a nap is in order.....

Quote of the Day!

"The email of the species is deadlier than the mail"  - Mr Stephen Fry !

All in a day's work!

Something really weird happened to me today.  It's been so long since it happened to me that I had to double check that it really did!!

It started off as just another ordinary day....

I got up, fell over the shoes I had left on the bedroom floor the night before, made my way to the bathroom, had a shower, got soap in my eyes, forgot to bring in a towel for my hair, dripped wet hair everywhere, dried my hair in such a hurry that it was sticking out all over the place, discovered that the trousers I wanted to wear to work were in the laundry basket, found another pair and then realized that the shoes I fell over didn't go with them so had to look for another pair, went downstairs, fell over the dog, burnt my breakfast, let the dog out, noticed what I had left out for lunch was eaten the night before by a hungry teenager, let the dog in, couldn't find my keys, let the dog out again, ate my breakfast, searched for my keys, filled the dogs bowl, found my keys, let the dog in again, got in the car, was now late, traffic was cr*p, sang along to the radio, shouted out the answers to the quiz on the morning show, traffic still crap, made it to work just in time, and then it happened.....

I got in the lift, pressed the wrong floor, got off and walked back down the stairs, walked as quietly to my desk as I could.......and there it was......There was a pile of work waiting for me!!!  A pile of work with little yellow post-it's on it with my name on them.  How weird is that!!  Well its very weird for me and I had to check that I was at the right desk and that I was awake and it wasn't all just a dream and I would wake up and Bobby would be in the shower (That's a Dallas reference for those of you old enough to remember).  :-)

Seriously, I have been unemployed and under-employed now for almost a year and a half and I was beginning to despair.  My brain was beginning to think that my body had left it.  But, at last it looks like I am starting to become useful to this company that I am temping with.  I seem to be in demand now and everybody wants me to do different things for them.  All of a sudden they are adding me to different 'systems' and making sure I know how to use them.  It's great to feel so needed and useful again!!  :-)

Long may it last, and I even left work, that I didn't have time to complete today, behind me for tomorrow.  So no more "going in and waiting around for something to do" for me!!  Maybe now they will actually give me a permanent job.

(Although if they read the paragraph about my very inefficient way of getting ready and getting to work, they would never employ me!!)

I was in such good humor I sang all the way home in the car....(lucky for my fellow commuters that the windows were up!!)

A dog's life....

Dear reader(s)

I hope you're well.

Well I was going to write to you and tell you what a marvelous time I had skiing over the weekend.  So I got out my computer, turned it on and first thing I saw was a message from my brother telling me that his dog has just died.  Oh No!!  He has had him 10 years.  RIP Rocky.

I feel sad.....

Unless you have, or have had a dog, you won't understand how horrible this actually is.  I had to have a dog put down a couple of years ago and I still think of him.  As you know, I do have another dog (Rusty) now, for my sins, and I don't know what I would do without him.  In my brothers words "Rocky was a complete git and never did what he was told, but he had a great personality".

I feel nostalgic....

He was a boxer, white, with a black eye, hence the name 'Rocky'.  Apparently his reign of terror in Chelsea (London) is now over.  My brother brought him to my Uncles house and buried him in the huge forest that borders his back garden, beside his (Rocky's) father 'George' .  My nephew Alex, wanted to know why he couldn't dig him up and bring him home.....oh to be five!!

I feel cheered up.....

Cheered up enough to tell you that I had a great time on the slope in the snow dome, and it felt great to be outdoors, even tho' it was indoors, if you know what I mean.  Inside we were wearing thermal underwear hats and scarves and - in my case - two pairs of gloves and socks.  But when you go outside, its warm and sunny and you are wearing a t-shirt and sandals!  A very strange feeling!  A bit like the feeling in my fingers and toes, or was that the lack of feeling!!

I feel.....eh......felt cold.

Some day, when I eventually learn to stay upright, I will make a great skier!  For now tho' I will have to just resign my self to the fact that I am hopeless and only for my very patient instructor, I would have given up after the first lesson.  At least I don't ski with my knees together anymore!  And I am able to get up now by myself when I fall down.  And I can get off the ski lift all on my own without the aid of 14 able bodied men....

I feel silly....

OK, I'm off now to soak all my bruises in a nice hot bath.  Oh wait.....I don't have a bath........

I feel bruised....

Chat soon
XX
S

ps....there was a one-legged skier at the Dome.....(I kid you not)......and he didn't fall down......hmmm......maybe that's where I'm going wrong......

Liberating Libya

Trouble in Tripoli, terrible times,
It looks like the Rebels are behind 'enemy' lines
I hope that the fighting and killing will cease
and the people of Libya can soon live in peace.

From a country that knows what it's like to be 'troubled'
and to have city streets with gunfire pummeled.
I wish you the best in your time of need
and on the long road to freedom, I wish you 'God speed'...

Snow joke!

Thermal vest - check
Thermal leggings - check
Thick socks - check
Polo neck top - check
Fleece - check
Hat - check
Gloves - check
Salopettes - check (yes Salopettes!)
Ski Jacket - check

No....I'm not going out for a walk with the dog!  I'm going Skiing!! :-)

For the second time this year I am off to the slopes.  "The slopes in August?" I hear you cry.  OK, confession time......it's an artificial slope.  A snow dome in Hemel Hempstead of all places.

Hemel Hempstead!  Home to.....eh.....let me think.....eh.....just a sec......eh...
Hemel Hempstead!  Famous for.....eh.....hold on.....(there must be something?).....eh.....

What can I say!  It has a snow dome.  And tomorrow night it will have a visit from a very rowdy Irish Ski Club.....maybe it will be famous for something after that visit.  Or should that be notorious.

Who cares!!  I'll have my skis on and a happy face.  I hope I can remember what to do  :-/

Oh wait.....I just heard that Hemel Hempstead is famous for Europe's biggest peacetime explosion....!!  Jeez...

Water load of drizzle......

I can't believe what I am reading.

I have just read an article (and not for the first time) about this being the coldest summer in 50 years.  But, (that old 'but' again) the article also stated that despite the amount of rainfall this summer Dublin is running out of water!!  Running out of water...I had to read it a couple of times for it to sink (sorry!) in!  Who is responsible for this, do we have to go out with our buckets every time it rains and collect the water for ourselves??

I am so annoyed I think I'll have drink.......And to show how civic minded I am I am not going to drink water, oh no, I am going to preserve what's in my tap, and I am going to have a glass of wine instead!  So there!!!

In the Dungeon again?

I'm back, back in a Dungeon, but don't panic.....it's not THE Dungeon!!

But actually I am very happy to be in this Dungeon.  I'm back working at the Airport again, but not 'on site' this time I am actually in the building!  OK, its the basement of the building, but I'm in it!!

I am way down in the depths of the building, underneath the baggage hall, and to get there I have to go down in the firemans lift.  The first time they brought me down there I expected, when the lift door opened, to see Bruce Willis standing in front of me wearing only a string vest and an Uzi....

Its very confusing getting around down here, I am constantly getting lost.  My security pass doesn't work on every door so I know I'm lost when I come to one that I can't open.  Then I have to retrace my steps and start again!  Why did they make these doors all look the same.  They should be colour coded to match the security passes.  I did mention this in the office today and it was greeted with such hilarity that I ended up laughing myself.  I really wish I had paid more attention to all those drawings that I folded and filed, then I would be easily able to find my way round.  None of my colleagues seem to have any difficulty finding their way round, although, I suppose, they did create the building.  I know I am going to go through a 'wrong' door and end up on the ramp and cause a major international incident!  Can you just imagine it....

king News....Breaking News....Breaking News.....Breaking News.....Breaking News.....Breaking News.....B

IN A SERIOUS INCIDENT TODAY AT DUBLIN AIRPORT, A BLOND WOMAN WAS APPREHENDED WANDERING ON THE RUNWAY CARRYING SEVERAL CANS OF PAINT.  EACH CAN CONTAINED A DIFFERENT COLOUR PAINT.  WHEN QUESTIONED ABOUT HER STRANGE AND EXTREMELY DANGEROUS BEHAVIOUR, SHE CLAIMED THAT SHE WAS JUST TRYING TO MAKE IT EASY TO FIND HER WAY ROUND THE BUILDING.

AN INVESTIGATION IS NOW UNDERWAY TO DISCOVER HOW THIS OBVIOUSLY DISTURBED WOMAN GOT PAST SECURITY AND WAS ABLE TO MAKE HER WAY AIRSIDE.  A GENTLEMAN DID COME FORWARD AND CLAIM THAT HE WAS A WORK COLLEAGUE AND THAT HER STORY WAS IN FACT GENUINE.

THEY ARE BOTH NOW IN CUSTODY AWAITING A PSYCHIATRIC EVALUATION....

More to follow......

Anyone for tennis?

My father (80) who had an operation on his spine last year, today informed us that he was back.....

He played tennis today with his old (!) team members, and in this instance, is certainly wasn't about the winning but absolutely about the taking part.  Go Eddie!!

There was a young (?) fella called Eddie,
Who's forehand wasn't very steady.
But with one smash of his racket
he sure didn't hack it
and for a championship match he is ready!!

I hope I can play tennis when I'm eighty....(I can't play now....does that matter??)

These feet were made for.....

Tickling!!

Because of all my complaining, my brother finally sent me a picture of the new arrival!!

My brother may have lost some sleep over the last couple of days....but he hasn't lost his sense of humour!!

This is not the end......oh wait....

Thursday, August 11, 2011

I am not amused!!

So, as you know, I spent all day yesterday waiting on the arrival of the newest member of the Brennan Clan.

While I was eagerly waiting, I was in constant contact with my Brother (the expectant father) via Twitter and that wonderful invention - text.    Isn't technology marvelous.  Well, after the happy event he finally called me and we had a little chat.  He was very excited and animated, but I did manage to say to him send a photo, and his last words to me on the call were "I will do it right now"....

So I waited, again!  Looking forward to seeing the first picture of the tiny bundle.  I waited.....I checked my 'in' box, no nothing.....so I waited.  I checked again before I went to bed....but nothing!

I didn't want to call him again as I though he would be busy doing all those things that new fathers do, you know, like:  fainting on the delivery room floor.  Or, crying and hugging all the nurses and telling them that he loves them.  Or, smoking a huge cigar, even tho' he has never smoked in his life.  Or begging for quarters for the phone so that he can call everybody.  Or, buying drinks for strangers in a bar.... So I waited....But no picture came.....

Turns out though, that he did sent a picture.  He sent a picture to all his other brothers and sisters, his parents, his friends, his work colleagues, the nurses in the hospital, the man who delivers his newspaper every morning.   Next door's cat....I think Reuters even got it.  Everybody got it.....except me!

Are you reading this Dex??  I am cancelling that flight that I haven't booked yet!!  :-P

(I did get to see little Conor, by the way, my Mother showed me her picture....he looks nothing like his Dad!!!)

Wednesday, August 10, 2011

Hello....Welcome....and about time!!

Welcome to the latest edition of the Brennan Family.  Produced by the Boston (MA) USA, branch.

It's a boy!  And in usual Brennan male fashion, he was late.  9 days late.  And took the longest most indirect and leisurely way that he could to arrive.  He didn't ask anybody for directions, took a few rest stops on the way and arrived knowing everybody would be delighted to see him anyway!

He joins the every expanding and International family that is the Brennans, we now have an American born in our midst, to add to the English and Dutch contingent that we already have.  We also have some from Cork, but we try not to mention them too often....

Welcome Baby Conor Reid Brennan, who weighted in at 10lb 2oz (OMG!!).                   .
And CONGRATULATIONS to his very tired and emotional parents.

I hate being 3000 mile away....there's nothing like putting a new baby up on your shoulder and feeling them pull their knees up and snuggling in....I would love a cuddle and a nuzzle....and I would love to take off his tiny socks and tickle his little pink toes.....or put my little finger beside his hand and feel his little hand grasp it....

BIG SIGH...I'd really love to book a flight!!

Quote of the Day!

Just read this quote from an employee of one of Waterstones (Bookstore) stores in London yesterday.

"We'll stay open.  If they steal some books, they might learn something"

Brilliant! But I'm not sure too many of them can read.....

It's all going on!

I've just read an article written by a woman who was out for dinner in a restaurant in London last night.  They hadn't been eating long when the looters arrived.  Looters?  In a restaurant?  She had to hand over her engagement and wedding rings....before the kitchen staff came to the rescue with rolling pins, fry baskets and other kitchen tools!

If you wrote this for a film script it would be laughable....

Here's the link if you want to read it for yourself:

http://www.runawaysquirrels.com/2011/08/london-riots-comes-to-the-ledbury/

Just one small story among hundreds out there.

And go the 'cleanup crew' too!  They have my support (from behind my computer screen)!  It just goes to show, you can take their rings and their flat screen TV's, but you can't take their spirit!

What's still going on?

Once again, I am glued to the TV, and once again, I can't believe what I am seeing.  London's burning again tonight.

One politician has described it as 'a difficult evening'!  What an understatement.

I hope peace and order is restored very soon to a place that I love and visit quite regularly.

My thoughts are with my family in London tonight, I know they are all safe, but still....

Girl power!

I have made two new friends in the past 24 hours, and I can credit both new friendships to the power of the written word!  I'm very proud.

The first one (Hi Nellie - I am guessing you are reading!) is somebody I will probably never meet, and the second is somebody I will probably meet almost every day!

Nellie (who is travelling the US in an RV with her husband and crazy dog) found me through my Blog!  And my other new friend, who's name I don't know yet because we were too busy talking about books to bother with introductions, found me through my daily lunchtime routine of sitting at the dock reading!

Nellie wants to read about life in Ireland through my Blog (oh dear, how can I tell her, my blog is only about the rain in Ireland!! :-/ ) and my other new friend, Miss X, who I know is Eastern European, wants to read about Ireland through books written by Irish Authors.  So, Miss X is reading her way round Ireland, while poor Nellie only gets to read her way round my head.

Miss X and myself had a discussion today about the book that I am reading, which is set in Co Cork.  She hasn't yet read anything about Cork so she was very interested.  I told her she could have it when I was finished with it and she was amazed that I was so generous.  I explained to her that I bought it yesterday for €1 and would be glad to pass it on, but she was still amazed.  She offered me the one she is reading, but I have already read that one!!

So, I am looking forward to seeing how my relationships with my two new friends go.

But...(there's always a but!!)  I was just thinking, like in the book that I am reading, why wasn't it a handsome male that noticed me reading at the dock everyday and came over to say hello......BIG SIGH!!

A disappointing day in Dublin ??

I've been reading all week about the great success that Dublinbikes has been.  It has been, and I quote "held up as an example of a design success story for Ireland's capital city".  And apparently the system has captured the imagination of us, the public.

Well it certainly captured my curiosity, if not my imagination.  So today being such a nice day I decided I would have a look and see just how enjoyable a bike ride around Dublin on a sunny day would be.  It's been years since I was on a bike, I think the last time I rode one it had one big wheel at the front and a tiny one at the back....a penny farting!!  Kidding!!

Anyway, I pass one of the hire stations on my way home on the bus everyday so I though I would start there.  I got the bus into town and got off in Dame Street.

Dublin is in great form today after our Gaelic Football's team great victory yesterday over Tyrone.  So lots of happy Dubliners and a very touristy atmosphere around.  As I walked towards the bike station I noticed that none of the bikes were being used, they were all parked in a nice neat row attached to their locking devices.  Hmmm...maybe we only use our imaginations during the week!

I checked them out and picked one that I wouldn't have to adjust the saddle on for my short legs.  Found the instructions on the terminal, pressed all the right buttons, inserted my card and...ooh....getting excited now and....eh....nothing happened!  OK, I tried again.  Followed all the instructions, more carefully this time, and waited.  Still nothing happened.  The penny dropped.  This station isn't working, that's why all the bikes are still here.  Bah Humbug!  I had a look at the map on the back of the terminal and found the next nearest station.  There are two at Stephens Green.  Happy Day's, and a nice walk up Grafton Street to get to them. On my way I bought a book in a second hand shop for €1, what a bargain.  There was all sorts of activity on Grafton Street as usual, the most entertaining being a group of Cowboy Hat'ed Violin playing boys and girls who were rocking the joint!!  Sorry would love to stay and watch but I have a bicycle to catch!

Walked around the Green to the station and noticed that all the bikes were parked here too.  Oh no.  But being the eternal optimist that I am, I decided to try my card at this station.  But again no luck.  Just my luck!  The day I pick to try this great asset to our city, it's not working.

I was so disappointed....

Only one way to get over this disappointment, buy an ice-cream and sit in Stephens Green by the pond, eat it and watch the world go by.  And after that a spot of shopping and still time to run back down Grafton Street and catch the end of the boy and girls in the hats!!

So not such a disappointing day in Dublin after all.  I'll just have to come back again next week and try the bikes....

What's going on?

I have loads to do today, but I can't seem to drag myself away from the Television coverage of the riots in Tottenham.

Fascinating and frightening....

My thoughts are with the people who have been left homeless and bereaved.

Who am I?

Great new word for today:

Googleganger: someone who shares your name and so crops up when you Google yourself
(It’s highly unlikely you will ever meet your Googleganger. But if you ever do, at least you will have something to discuss).
So....how could I resist.  I Googled myself.

To my utter disappointment, I wasn't there.

There were lots of me, well not me, but lots of my 'googlegangers'.  Apparently there are 76 people in the UK with the same name as me.  That's OK cos I don't live in the UK.  The site offered me all their names and addresses, so I could go and meet them, as according to the description of the word, we have lots to discuss....

I'm (my GG) also on Bebo and My-space and have several Facebook accounts.

I have some interesting jobs too:
I'm an owner of an Ice Boutique (bizarre)
I'm a Marketing Manager for Medical Devices (sounds painful)
I work in the Art Department of a Funeral Parlour (It's a TV program)
I'm a teacher at a school in Donegal (I like this one!)
I have a Designs Company in San Fransisco (have I?)
I'm a Lawyer in Trenton New Jersey (and I take no prisoners!!)
I raised $76,473 in a Democratic election campaign (wow, go me!!)
I have a doll called 'The Dreamer' modeled after me (very pretty, obviously)

And

I'm also a Clinical Scientist (so watch out, I may have to do some very painful experiments on you)

Eh.....I also found my death notice.....(So this is actually a blog from the other side.....!)

So I didn't find myself.....will I ever??

But I did find a very interesting web site where you can look up all your old school friends.  When I find them and organize a reunion, they will be very impressed with all my above achievements!!!

Right, better go and make the tea for the boss.  :-)

All the Presidents Men!

While I didn't particularly want him to be the next President of my country, I found Senator David Norris' speech, telling of his intention to step out of the race for the Oireachtas, to be inspiring and moving.  He certainly stepped down in a very dignified and graceful manner, thanking all his campaign workers, even tho' they choose not to stand by him.  He said he wrote that controversial letter "out of love and concern for someone who had been very important in his life".  It just goes to show that no matter who we are or what position we hold, we all do silly things when emotions are involved.

I liked that he stood outside his own house and gave his speech, and didn't give it from behind some official office desk or in front of some public building.

I also like his Samuel Beckett Quote:
"Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try Again. Fail again. Fail better."

Guess what?

Surprise, surprise...

Met Eireann have just released their monthly weather summary for July, and according to the figures, I quote "parts of the country have had their coolest July in almost 50 years"!  Air temperatures measured at all the Airports around the country were lower than normal and so were sunshine and wind speeds!

So all my complaining and moaning about the weather has been officially endorsed by the lovely people at Met Eireann.  It probably cost them a fortune to produce that report.

Whereas, I did it for nothing here on my blog!!

Next week I might do the lotto numbers.....

There was a young girl called Siobhan
Who didn't think July was terribly warm
Who could believe that
she wore a coat and a hat,
And prepared for the worst, a snow storm!!
