Fly me to the...

I had lovely walk today in my usual haunt.  Well it was lovely, except for the files.

It was like a scene from a cartoon with me as the main character.  I was chased by a bunch of very pi**ed of flies with ADHD.  All the way round the path, they attacked from every angle.  I don't know why they were so fed up with me!!  My arms were tired from swatting continuously, and my ears were sore from all the buzzing.....why do they always go for your ears?  I thought the only way I could get away from them would be to, in very cartoon-ish style, jump into a lake.  There's never a lake around when you need one.  Of course Rusty thought all this swatting was a great game, and joined in enthusiastically!!  His barking didn't deter the pesky flies.

I thought I would draw a picture to show my ordeal to you.  So I did, but I didn't know how to load it on here for you to look at, so I'll just describe the picture for you...

My drawings are all two dimensional and very Lowry-esq!

Picture....

A matchstick man or woman in this case (not sure how you tell the difference, long hair maybe??) stick hands up in the air with a cloud of black dots around her head (they're the files), posed in running motion on a path made of two parallel lines curving up and down.  And behind her a matchstick dog, peeing against one of the trees in the forest that are lined up all along the path.  All of these trees are all drawn in the style of Christmas trees, you know, a few triangles on top of one another and a square at the bottom (that's the only way I know how to draw trees!).  In front of her a big lake, well it's just a wavy circle really, but you know it's a lake because of the matchstick fish in there (more triangles).  The path goes all the way to the lake and she, the running matchstick person, is just at the end of it...

Maybe I should take up drawing instead of blogging....

What a bright idea...

http://www.good.is/post/liter-of-light-outfits-filipino-shacks-with-plastic-bottle-solar-bulbs

Today I don't feel like doing anything....

Just back from lunch at the Dock!  It was like being on holiday in Spain (without the Spaniards and the bikini!!).   Sunshine, noodles and coffee.  Tapas would have been nice, and so would a glass of wine, but I had to remember that I was at lunch, and not on holidays!  I wanted to sit there and sit there and sit there...

This is what a real July should be like and I just checked the weather forecast and it look like we are in for more of the same.  Hurray!  At Last!  Does this mean that at last I might get some colour into this pasty face of mine, and with a Bank Holiday weekend coming up, lazying about in the garden could be on the agenda for just that purpose.

See it doesn't take much to make me happy.

So for the weekend, I'll just sit in the sunshine and I won't think about the fact that I have no job....or that my house needs to be painted....or that the windows need to be cleaned.... or that the European Ironing Mountain has once again appeared in my laundry room....or that I need to sort out the pile of college paperwork that has accumulated in my Kitchen....or....or....or....

I'll do all that stuff when it rains.....Oh wait.....hasn't it been raining since January....oops!!

Don't you just love the Dutch!

One night in Bofin...

...and the worlds your Oyster!

Well, hardly, because it's only a tiny, but lovely, Island of the West Coast of Ireland, but you could eat oysters there!

I decided, having been challenged to do so, to have a little adventure for myself this weekend and visit Inish Bofin Island, so I got in my car and drove West. I like going West, it reminds me of my Rallying days when I spent many an hour standing at Maam's Cross, freezing, waiting for the rally cars to go by.

So, when I had reached as far West as I could go and eventually met the Atlantic, I parked my car (in somebody's field - it's very rural!) got on the InishBofin ferry, and went even West-er!

The ferry itself for me was a challenge, but to my surprise and delight, I didn't feel at all sea-sick, and stood on the deck and enjoyed the ride, and the view. Connemara is a bit of a bleak county, but the romance of looking back at it from a boat on the sea gives it a completely different perspective. As soon as we were out far enough, I turned my back on the mainland and looked out to where I was going. It didn't take long for the Island to come into view, and it was quite a smooth sailing.

OK I'm not going to give you a blow by blow account of all the pros and cons of the Island, if you want those, look up the web site and have a look at what the Americans say about it!!  Why are there no reviews by the Irish?  Do we just take the quaint beautiful peaceful islands dotted around our coastline for granted, or are we just too smug about their beauty and attraction, and don't feel the need to write our thoughts about them down?

Anyway I got off the ferry and it wasn't raining, a miracle!  My first stop was the Hostel to leave my bag etc and get my bearings.  The Hostel was like going back in time.  They leave the key in the door all the time, like your Granny's house, and the taps (faucets for the Americans) have little 'H' and 'C' 's on them.  The last time I stayed in a Hostel was in the 80's when I stayed in one in Paris, and even back then it was more modern than the one on Bofin.  But that doesn't take away from the character of the place.  I loved it instantly.  Even the steep walk up the hill to it!

I did what I set out to do, a three hour walk (that's what it said on the web site) of the Island, but it only took me a little over two, I felt cheated.  But it was everything I thought it would be, sheep, heather, rocks and sea views!  Oh and a lovely beach.  A sheep dog joined me on the road, but he must have gotten fed up with me asking him questions as he didn't walk with me for long.

Made it back to the Hostel and decided to go out for Dinner.  My hair was a disaster, sea and damp island air decided to restyle it, with terrible results.  Typical!

I had fish for dinner, well what else would you have when surrounded by water!  And after eating everything that was put in front of me all that was left was for the music to start.  On the ferry on the way over there were some musicians carrying the usual instruments and one unusual one, a Double Bass.  Curiosity got the better of me and I asked them what kind of music they were going to play, and they replied 'Traditional' while giving me a funny sideways look.  Traditional music with a Double Bass, this I had to see.  Well to my surprise it worked very well!  I enjoyed it, right up until I got chatted up by an Italian who wanted to buy me an Irish Coffee.  I declined politely of course, firstly, because I don't drink whiskey and secondly because of the six Italian 'Mamas' that were already with him sitting at his table.  I didn't fancy sparing with them!! And thirdly, he was about eighty!!

I made it back up the hill to the Hostel, and slept soundly.

Just as well I had explored the Island on my first day there, because when I looked out the window the next morning I couldn't see anything further than the pane of glass.  A thick fog had descended on the Island.  This is probably normal, but of course I panicked.  I thought of what it would do to my hair!  I also though that the ferry wouldn't be able to sail and I would have to stay on the Island.  It wouldn't be so bad as long as there was food and something to read or something to write with/on.  I thought I could write a book, with the title "Trapped on an Island, with Fog Hair - the story of one girl and her fight for frizz free follicles".....

Somebody told me that everything was good on Bofin, but I'm afraid that they were wrong.  My hair wasn't!!

Anyway I need not have panicked, the ferry sailed, with me on it, feeling a little bit wistful!  I enjoyed my trip to the Island and the Hostel, and I came home armed with a book with details of all the Hostels in Ireland in it, so you never know, I might just conjure up another 'challenge' for myself.

So into to my little motor and onto the long road back East.  Well I made such good time, that I was able to do something that I didn't think I would get home in time to do.  I made it (just about) to Marley Park to see James Vincent McMorrow in concert.  What an evening, what a setting, and what a performer.  It started off with just him and his haunting voice and lovely tunes, and then on came the band to join him!  Magic Stuff!! And a lovely way to finish off a great weekend.

                                                                             * * * *
So an action packed adventurous and entertaining weekend for me. But.....while I was having all this entertainment and adventure, I didn't forget the people of Norway and their terrible tragedy.  And I have just one question.  Why??

Also, I have to remember the Winehouse family, who's talented and tragic daughter, this weekend, became the latest member to join the "27 Club".  I hope you find some peace now Amy.  And while I wasn't a huge fan, I can (could?) recognize her talent and this (although not one that she wrote herself) is my favourite track.

Unidentified (Shining) Object!

Got up this morning (a bonus!) and it wasn't raining (double bonus!).  Great!  Made my way to the bus stop without having to avoid puddles or cars splashing me, so I was able to look up instead of down!  To my surprise there was a strange object in the sky.  It sort of looked vaguely familiar, but I wasn't sure what it was.  I didn't know if it looked familiar because I had seen something like it in a sci-fi movie or if it was because it was something I had seen before sometime.  Anyway no time to stand there pondering, I had to run for the bus.

To my surprise, when I got off the bus, the strange object was still in the sky, brighter now.  Was it following me?  Sometimes I get followed round the park when I'm walking the dog, by the Police Helicopter (I must look suspicious, or else the dog does!), but this was different.  Had it followed my bus??  Should I be concerned??

I decided to Google it and see what would happen.  I found a web site exactly for this kind of thing.  So I sent a polite e-mail detailing what I saw and wondered if anybody else had spotted the bright shiny object.  Actually there were loads of sites, and I had to choose very carefully where I sent my mail.  I didn't want to send it to the Americans, they might come and take me away and make me tell them things that I don't normally tell anybody, like my age and my dress size!!  And I didn't want to send it to the Russians, cos the Americans might have intercepted it, and then I would be back to square one.  So I e-mailed the UK, they think the Irish are mad anyway, so what's one more e-mail from a crazy Irish woman.

It wasn't long before I got a reply.

Dear Ms Smith (Obviously I didn't give my real name!)

Thank you for your very detailed, very descriptive and very long e-mail that we received this morning. (I detect a slight note of exasperation here).

I know it has been a long time, and I know you thought it would not happen this year, but that 'object' that you have seen this morning, is the SUN.  (I knew it was familiar)

Just so that you are aware, it is July and the Sun is not a rare phenomenon at this time of the year.  It may follow you all day today so try not to be alarmed.  And please be aware that it may make some more appearances over the next couple of days, so please make sure you are well prepared for more of these sightings. (Does he mean wear SPF and a hat??)

And although we are always happy to hear from our nearest neighbours, please do not e-mail if you do happen to spot it again, as I will be busy replying to the 2 million other e-mails that I have received from Ireland this morning. (Lots of happy Irish people this morning!!)

It's still out there, but I'm not afraid anymore, I have my SPF ready......

Who's the man?

I'm impressed.  Go Enda!!

Yesterday our Taoiseach delivered a speech that was within hours making news all over the world.  Imagine, an Irish Catholic Politician denouncing the Vatican.  Unthinkable, especially when other politicians before him have declared themselves to be "a Catholic first and Irishman second".

At last, somebody has said what a lot of ordinary people have been thinking.  And delivered with such control and eloquence.  And in the words of Miriam Lord "it was more hard hitting then the belt of a Crozier".  It's about time that the Vatican realize that they can't just brush things under their very expensive carpets any longer.  I'm not knocking the Catholic Church, I know there are some 'good ones' out there, but I'm sure even they are glad that somebody has finally spoken out.  I haven't read the Cloyne report yet, it's not a nice subject to read about, but I will.

And well done Enda.  Maybe my Swedish Chef comments from last week were a bit harsh...... (Can't believe I just wrote that!!)

Not again.

Another day, another 'no thanks',
So I am still one of the unemployed ranks!
This temporary job, is keeping me sane
But, will I ever have a full time job again?

So its back to the drawing board again that I go,
Where to try this time, I really don't know.
It will get better, I hear people say,
It's has to be my turn, so that's what I pray.

I will keep trying, of that you can be sure
and one day a really good job I'll procure.
But right now I think I'll just have a drink,
and tomorrow give the whole thing a re-think!

A new me tomorrow, that's what you'll see
and it won't be just what's in my CV.
I'll be like Madonna or Lady Ga Ga,
and reinvent myself, and be better by far!!

(I might have two drinks....!)

"It's time to put on make up..."

An article in the paper today tell us of an 'incident' in the Dail yesterday....

Mick Wallace thought the mic was turned off, and he likened Mary Michell O'Connor to that most famous of all Muppet's, Miss Piggy.  Unfortunately his, and his two fellow Independent TD's conversation was overheard by the 'lady' herself.

In today's paper they printed pictures of some of the other 'Muppet' characters.  They didn't need to give explanations as to which Dail member that they related to.  I was able to figure it out for myself:

Sam the Eagle - Shane Ross
Animal - Mick Wallace
Grover - Luke (Ming) Flannagan

Only three,  I am surprised!

I could suggest that we liken Enda to Kermit, but that would be doing Kermit an injustice!  I think Enda looks more like the Swedish Chef, makes his policies in the same way that the chef makes his recipes, and is as incomprehensible!!

So it looks like we just swapped one set of Muppet's for another.....

More....(loud applause) More.....!

Four days in a row!  It's a record.  I'm ringing the Guinness Book of Records.  Or maybe I'll just have a Guinness to celebrate!!  (I would, except I don't like the taste of it....)

Seriously, that's four nights in a row now, that I have been able to sit outside, and tonight I had the added bonus of being home early enough to eat outside too.  Long may it last!

The only down side is, I now have a 'head worm'!!

Will I share.....?

Ode to a fly!

Could somebody please tell me why,
at the end of the short life of a fly,
when they can go here or there
or in fact anywhere,
that they land on my window ledge when they die?

They really are such a pest,
when on my ledges they get laid to rest.
And they bring all their friends
the procession never ends,
and they really put my nerves to the test!

So a solution to this problem I must find.
I already have something in mind!
I'll try employing a spider,
to make my ledges tidier,
then my problem will be an eight legged kind....

Two in a row!

Two nights in a row!  That's two this whole summer!  A miracle.

Two nights in a row that is, that we have been able to sit outside on the deck.  It's by no means warm, it's not even balmy, but it wasn't raining and it was pleasant enough to sit there and read a book and drink coffee.  It was nice and peaceful, the only interruption was the dog asserting himself when a brave bee, cheeky crow or menacing magpie dared to enter the airspace over the garden.

And the added advantage of having an electronic reader, meant that I didn't have to move when it got dark.  In fact I didn't even notice that it had turned dark, I only moved when I realized that I could no longer feel my toes!  And I was just getting to a good part in the book too....

Lets hope we get at least another two this (week) summer!

Fantasy lunch

I sit at the dock most days for my lunch, it doesn't matter if it is windy, it doesn't matter if it is dull, just as long as it is not raining then I sit there and eat my lunch with my head stuck in my book!   All sorts of people join me for my lunch and there are always diverse and eclectic groups dotted here and there.

Usually, I don't take too much notice of the conversations that people are having while they join me at the dockside as I am always engrossed in whatever mystery or fantasy that is taking place in my book.  And of course I'm too busy eating!

But today I heard grown adults talking about how they want to go to see the latest Harry Potter movie in 3D.

I confess, I did eavesdrop!  Only because I was fascinated as to why these adults were arranging among themselves a night out at a Harry Potter Movie.  Was I having my lunch with a strange cult??  I did check their foreheads - with a discrete sideways glance - for funny squiggly markings, but there were none to be seen...

I never got the whole 'Harry Potter' thing, no matter how hard I tried, and I did try, but I only ever made it to the end of the first book.  Maybe I just don't have the imagination that I should have to understand these books.  I did go on the 'Deathly Hallows' Luas once, and was a bit disappointed that I wasn't catapulted into some amazing adventure involving a flying train and astonishing evil wizardry, which ends in  me being captured by the evil Lord Voldemort.  This in turn would have led to an impossible task for Harry (played for some reason in my fantasy by George Clooney)  in rescuing me, first having to figure out how to get past the crazy bunch of screaming women who keep wanting to hug him (Harry hasn't actually realised that he is George Clooney!)!  So he uses his magic wand and makes them all disappear, but his spell goes a bit wrong, and he actually makes every other woman on the planet disappear too, apart from me of course (well it is my fantasy!).  And then an exciting battle with Lord 'V' ensues involving lots of evil laughing and scary looks, and Harry trying to rescue me before an evil, purple spotted, seven legged flying creature cuts the very thin string, with his horribly grotesque claw, that is holding me over a deep ravine full of ghostly headless horsemen with .......Then the Luas arrived at Stephens Green, and reality, and I had to get off....!

Anyway my fellow lunchers continued their discussion blissfully unaware that I was listening to their inch by inch analysis of the first part of the story and how they thought the second part would look in 3D.  So, they made their arrangements to meet and go to the movie, and finished their lunch.

Then they all got up, put on their black pointy hats, and flew away on their broomsticks......

I'm still laughing!

I don't read the tabloid newspapers.  But sometimes their cheesy headlines catch my eye when I am walking past a news stand.  This evening I couldn't help noticing the headline on one that one of my fellow public transport passengers was reading.  It was related to Cheryl and Ashley Cole (will we every see the end of them in the paper?).  It read:

Third rock from the Bum!!!

Hilarious!

I don't know why I found it so funny, but I laughed all the way home.   I'm sure the other travelers on the bus thought I was mad!!  :-)

Another odd one!

OK, I'm not on a "vending machines around the world" buzz or anything, but...

By coincidence I read about a vending machine today in Minneapolis, USA, called Bike Fixation, and it does exactly what it says on the tin!  Its a vending machine full of bike parts, for example, tubes, lights and patch kits!  How awful.  Imagine stopping for a break after a hard cycle and looking for a drink or something to eat and all you get are bike parts!  I'd cry!!

They need some input from the Swiss.

In light of this I think I will start a campaign to bring back proper vending machines, ones that only contain chocolate....

Monday, July 4, 2011

Now that's what I call...

...a vending machine.

I've just seen a picture of a Swiss vending machine, sent by a friend who is visiting Switzerland at the moment.  I visited Switzerland myself, a hundred years ago, and I though the people were really cool.  They were very friendly and kind.  And one Landlady was particularly kind to two poor starving students, when they were looking for a bed for the night.  She put us up, fed us and only charged us half what the going rate was!  But, they have gone up even more in my estimation after seeing this picture.

The contents of the machine included:
Pretzels
Maltesers
M & M's
Kinder Bars
Crisps
Capri-Sun
Apple Juice
Bottled water

All good vending machine items.

Well it also included:
A packet of disposable razors,
A packet of condoms!

Always handy stuff to to have around!  You never know when you might need to shave your legs, or......! But make sure you don't let these last two items get too close in the bottom of your bag, because that could lead to disastrous results!

But, don't worry,  the Swiss seem to have all bases covered, as there was one more item.  What's the one thing, you would need to buy while waiting at the bus or train station, and they never have in a vending machine?  And you might need if the last two items crossed paths inadvertently!

A pregnancy test.....!

I need a dollar...

You know when you have a song in your head, and you keep singing the same line from it over and over.  And you find yourself singing it in the most inappropriate places, like the supermarket, or when the boss is talking to you, or on the bus, or in the library....

Well I found out to day that that is called a 'head-worm'.

So, here is my head-worm for today

What's yours?
Or...by the power of suggestion, is mine now yours....!!

Lazy Friday afternoon.

We can  hear The Script playing now, I'm rocking in my chair!  Everybody's listening and nobodys doing any work!  And it's somebodys birthday, so there's cake!  A great way to spend a Friday afternoon. Rock 'n' Roll!!!

AND the blinds are up now and I can see the sea!  And the P & O Ferry and Bull Island.  I'll miss all this when I am relegated to the 2nd floor on Monday.  All I will be able to see from there will be more buildings....and I'll have to do some work....boo hoo....

Sitting pretty!

Sitting here in my lovely modern offices, right at the top of the building.  I have a great view - when the blinds are open!  We have no control over this, as everything in the building is automated, so depending on which way the sun is shining, the blinds go up and down or open and close, of their own accord, it gets me every time!  Anyway,  right in front of me I can see the Aviva Stadium in all its glory, to my right, I can see the Grand Canal Theatre and to my left, I can see the sea (OK, that's actually a lie, there are too many buildings in the way, but I know it's there!!) and I can see clearly the two chimneys at Ringsend.  Behind me is the dock, but I have to turn around to see that, what a hardship!!

The Script are playing in the Stadium tomorrow night, and right now we are being treated to the warm-up bands rehearsal/sound check.  I can hear them perfectly and I am just trying to figure out who they are.  I will have to dig deeper to find out!  The Corona's are also playing support, so hopefully I will get to hear them rehearse too.  And if I stay here long enough, who knows, I might get to hear the Band themselves.....

So while I am typing away here, I get treated to great views and great sounds.  What a cool place to work!!
